“La Obesidad es contagiosa”

Tener un amigo obeso incrementa la posibilidad de engordar en un 57%
Así lo demuestra un estudio científico desarrollado por científicos de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Hardvard (EE.UU.) Después de realizar un exhaustivo seguimiento a 12.067 personas adultas durante 32 años, concluyendo que la Obesidad se transmite a través de los vínculos sociales de quien la padece.
Este trabajo, que publica la revista “New England Journal of Medicine”, indica que cuando una persona aumenta de peso considerablemente, también aumenta la posibilidad de que sus amistades o familiares también engorden.
Entre quienes poseen 2 amigos obesos, el riesgo es aún mayor y la posibilidad de aumentar de peso se incrementa hasta un 171%. Entre hermanos sube hasta el 40% y entre cónyuges, hasta el 37%.
” Lo que vemos es que la obesidad de una persona puede influir en otras a las cuales esté vinculada, tanto directa como indirectamente” asevera Nicholas Christakis, profesor del Departamento de Salud Pública de la Escuela de Medicina de Hardvard, que a su vez afirma que no sólo la obesidad se contagia, sino también la delgadez.
Epidemia
En todo el mundo occidental la obesidad se ha extendido entre la población durante las últimas décadas, pero en Estados Unidos adquiere un carácter de epidemia: el 66% de los estadounidendes tienen sobrepeso y un 32% son obesos. Una dura carga financiera para los sistemas de salud por la relación entre obesidad y diabetes, los problemas cardiovasculares y algunos tipos de cáncer.
En España, la obesidad infantil ha pasado del 5 al 16 % en 20 años, y según el Dr. Francisco Motales, Director del Servicio de Pediatría del Hospital Torrecárdenas, afecta al 43% de los niños del país.
Se recomienda declarar la guerra a los “snacks”, productos de botillería y bebidas azucaradas en las edades más tempranas, puesto que contienen un excesivo contenido energético. Además, es imprescindible fomentar la actividad física de los más pequeños.
